Job description
Certus Technology Associates Ltd
Location: Exeter — office-based
Job type: Full-time, permanent
Salary: £28,000–£40,000 per year, depending on skills and experience
Holiday: 22 days plus bank holidays, rising by one day per year to 25 days
At Certus, you will help turn complex healthcare related challenges into software and data analytics that support NHS healthcare professionals and life sciences organisations. You will contribute to a range of products and services including workforce management, rare disease care, quality and training management and diagnostic support. Working closely with customers and experienced colleagues, you’ll understand the needs of healthcare professionals and translate them into reliable, intuitive systems. You’ll contribute ideas, explore solutions using modern development tools and AI, and apply sound engineering judgement to deliver useful results. Working in our Exeter team and collaborating with our Sheffield team, you will develop your skills while building technology that helps improve services and patient care.
We are looking for an early-career software developer to join our Exeter team. You might be starting your professional career with substantial personal and college or university projects behind you, or have a few years’ experience and be ready to take on more responsibility.
We want to see what you can build, how you approach problems and how you are developing your skills.
The role
You will work with software engineers, data scientists and product owners to turn complex requirements into reliable, easy-to-use software. Our stack includes React, Next.js and GraphQL.
Alongside writing code, you will think carefully about the people using our products: what they are trying to achieve, how information should be presented and which established interface patterns will help them work confidently and efficiently.
AI-assisted coding is an integral part of how we see software development evolving. We are looking for someone who has actively explored AI coding tools and agentic workflows, understands their potential and can apply sound technical judgement to their output.
What you’ll do:
- Build and improve applications using React, Next.js and GraphQL.
- Work with product owners and colleagues to understand users’ needs and translate them into practical solutions.
- Create clear, consistent interfaces using established UX principles and interaction patterns.
- Consider accessibility, navigation, forms, feedback and error handling as part of everyday development.
- Use AI coding tools and agents to support development, breaking work into manageable tasks and reviewing and testing the results.
- Contribute to code reviews, automated tests, documentation and our development and delivery practices.
- Learn from colleagues, share what you discover and take increasing ownership as your skills develop.
What we’re looking for:
Evidence that you can build software. This could come from professional work, significant personal projects, or substantial college or university projects. We are interested in your contribution, the decisions you made and what you learned.
A good technical grounding. You should have practical experience with JavaScript or TypeScript and React, an understanding of how web applications work, and the ability to investigate and debug problems. Experience with Next.js and GraphQL would be valuable.
An understanding of good UX. You can look beyond whether a feature works technically and consider whether it makes sense to the user. You recognise useful interface patterns and can apply them to produce clear, accessible and consistent experiences.
Active engagement with AI-assisted development. You have used AI coding tools in real projects and explored workflows where agents help plan, implement or test changes. You can explain how you guide the tools, assess their output and decide when to intervene. You take responsibility for the resulting code, including its correctness, security and maintainability.
A collaborative approach. You ask questions, explain your thinking, respond constructively to feedback and enjoy solving problems with others.
You do not need a particular degree or a minimum number of years in employment. You do need convincing evidence of your skills, curiosity and ability to learn.
We would particularly welcome:
- Experience of NHS, healthcare, pathology or life sciences settings.
- Familiarity with UI design systems.
- Experience improving an interface in response to user feedback.
- Experience with automated testing, CI/CD or cloud deployment.
These are advantages rather than requirements.
Working at Certus
You will join a friendly, collaborative team developing software for real healthcare needs. There is scope to contribute ideas, learn from colleagues and see how your work fits into the wider product.
This role is based in our Exeter office, with normal working in the office five days a week. Working together in person is central to how our team collaborates and supports learning. We are accommodating when staff need flexibility around personal circumstances.
Whether you already live locally, are returning to Devon or are planning a move to Exeter, we would be pleased to hear from you.
We offer 22 days’ annual leave plus bank holidays, increasing by one day for each year of service to a maximum of 25 days plus bank holidays.
How to apply
Please apply with your CV and a covering letter explaining:
- Why you are interested in Certus and this Exeter-based role.
- A software project that demonstrates your skills, including your own contribution.
- How you have used AI coding tools or agents, and what you learned from the experience.
- An example of how you considered or improved the user experience.
- Your residence status and permanent right to work in the UK.
Links to relevant projects, screenshots, a portfolio or GitHub are welcome where you can share them. We understand that commercial work may be confidential.
